Goodbye Estonia, hello Riga

The Klintis sandstone cliffs, an endless Estonian coastal road, and arrival in Latvia's capital.

After hotel breakfast we set off for Latvia, where we’d spend the next few days.

First stop: Klintis campground. Six-metre sandstone cliffs, exposed red-sandstone caves, and a shoreline strewn with boulders of every size. The weather was finally reasonable (25 °C), with a strong sea breeze — at least it gave us some proper waves.

The campground itself was gorgeous. Shaded picnic areas, many with built-in grills (some in imaginative shapes), all set along this stunning beach among the pines. And it was empty.

We pushed on towards Latvia’s capital, Riga. The last stretch felt endless — the city just kept coming, and while there was no traffic jam, there were traffic lights on every corner.

We checked into the hotel, rested, ate an early dinner, and set off to walk the historic centre. Without the kids — they’re becoming allergic to walking. Hotel Wi-Fi kept them occupied, and we went alone.

The centre has a great many fascinating churches, impossibly enormous — photographing them is the problem. I hadn’t brought a wide-angle lens, and sometimes there was just nowhere to step back to. Several squares, several parks, everything within a single walking loop. We have all of tomorrow for Riga too.
